A case may be a bit pricier and it will not be practical especially if you just have a low-end guitar. The alternative to this is a guitar bag. It has a strap for easy transport and it is much more affordable than a guitar case. However, it does not give the same protection, therefore, if you own a high end guitar; better match it up with a protective case.
