Guitar Fingerstyle: A Practical Guide for Novice Guitarists

If you are new at playing guitar, you are probably wondering what fingerstyle guitar means. Fingerstyle guitar refers to the technique of playing the guitar using the fingertips and fingernails or in some cases picks attached to fingers. This is as opposed to flatpicking or the use of an individual pick. The term, fingerstyle is often confused with fingerpicking but the latter actually refers to a more specific stylistic subset.

Learning this style of playing the guitar is not that difficult if you know where to start. First, in order to get your fingers used to the habit of picking certain strings, you must learn the role pattern. A roll is a pattern of notes that will require your fingers to pick different string in a particular order.

Since the guitar has six strings, the bottom string is number 6, the next one to it is number 5, and next to number 5 is of course number 4. Use your thumb to pick string number 4, your pointer finger for number 5 and your middle finger for number 6. Place your pinky finger on the body of the guitar to give stability to your hand. Practice picking the guitar strings in patterns like 456, 456, 456, 456, 456, until you get the hang of it. This is the basic method of getting used to the technique of guitar fingerstyle.

All novice guitar players should be aware that becoming a master guitarist is not something that happens overnight. Unless you have the makings of musical prodigy, it will probably take you a while before you achieve expertise on this technique. But do not lose hope. It does not mean that it will take you forever to get your fingers to pluck the right strings.

As the cliché goes, practice makes perfect. By practicing day in day out, you would surely notice a great improvement in your playing abilities when it comes to the fingerstyle technique. To practice more efficiently, you would need to make use of a musical tool called the metronome, which will allow you to choose a tempo that you can practice along with. Because it is adjustable, you can set this tool according to the speed that you are comfortable with. This would help you develop technical proficiency, consistency, and musical control.

Another cliché that will be of good use for your guitar-playing endeavor is that patience is a virtue. You would not get anywhere if you are short tempered and you easily give up. You need to invest a good amount of time and effort in practicing over and over again to be able to get this technique right. If you do not get it right the first time, try and try until you do. Be patient and determined and you will surely reap the fruits of your efforts eventually.

Overtime, you will find that your fingerstyle technique would be smooth and seamless. Whether you are playing an electric guitar, classic guitar, or electro acoustic guitar, you will be able to play wonderful music using the fingerstyle technique.
